Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal, Mystery Blurb: Rayna Stone is an eighteen year old girl from a small Alabama town that just wants to save a little money for college. In order to do that she has to find a summer job. The problem with that, the only place that is willing to take her is the upscale golf resort of The Landing. This was not her idea of a summer job, being around snobby, rich folks, but when she meets eyes with the owner’s son, Liam, she starts to see the brighter side of things. That is until she’s seeing things that she can’t quite explain and having dreams that are haunted by a being she calls The Shadow. The Shadow begins to show her things about a few missing girls, that she wished she had never seen. Another chilling fact, her dreams seem to be coming true. As if that isn’t enough, she learns that this ability of hers gives her an insight into what others around her are feeling. Soon after this, Rayna learns that Liam does feel something for her, but even though she wants to tell him she feels the same, something is warning her to stay away. Not because he is dangerous, but because she is. My Thoughts: THE SHADOW is the first book in The Darkness Trilogy and I found myself scooped up by the story, invested in it, until it reached the for-now conclusion. The main story is Rayna is growing into psychic powers. She's never had them before and doesn't know how to deal with them. Not only that, but they're not 'nice' powers. When she dreams, she sees and feels what abducted girls are going through, their pain, their terror. Add this to trying to be a normal teenage girl who goes from having no love live to a weird triangle, and you have Rayna's life. This is mainly told from Rayna's perspective but it segues nicely into my biggest complaint. This book is first-person BUT not always from Rayna! This made it confusing as there was nothing to say who was speaking. I know some of it was the big bad but something should have been said/written to make it clearer. I've seen it done with chapter headings, or switching from first- to third-person. There are ways. And then towards the end, we get new characters speaking up and, once again, it isn't always clear who it is. The one person we DON'T hear from is the one I wanted to hear from the most - Liam. He has a story to tell but no voice with which to tell it. Maybe he will get one in the other books. I don't know. This book needs a good edit/proofreading as there are spelling mistakes littered throughout. However, that did not stop my enjoyment of it. I don't do triangles as a rule, but this was not normal, and I do want to see what happens next. A very good YA read with some dark scenes that some readers may find disturbing. A.G. Porter is the author of The Darkness Trilogy, a YA Paranormal Thriller, and two poetry collections, Pieces of My Heart and Pieces of My Soul. She is currently writing a spin-off of her The Darkness Trilogy characters, as well as a new YA Paranormal series, The Sacrifice of Ava Black, and her next poetry book. When she isn't writing, she's either busy being the coolest mom on the planet, crafting, or reading. Mrs. Porter lives in Alabama with her husband, Billy, and her amazing boys, Brenton, William, and Garrett.
Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal Blurb: After her mother and grandparents die in a raging house fire, eleven-year-old Sarah Redbird ends up in the custody of her aunt and uncle. Six years later, Sarah discovers the fire may not have been an accident at all, but a deliberate act of revenge. Sarah's family has kept the truth of their Native American heritage secret her entire life, refusing to acknowledge where they came from. But when a family that has direct ties to their past moves to town, Sarah's true identity is revealed. What Sarah soon learns is that some secrets are better left unspoken. My Thoughts: THE SPIRIT KEEPER is the first book in the series of the same name that talks about Native American legends and the ability to control the elements but, for the most part, it reads as a contemporary. I found this to be quite formulaic but also thoroughly enjoyable. You have the sweet sixteen - nearly seventeen, thank you very much - high school student who is bullied by the Queen B. A new guy arrives in town, liked by the in-crowd but he is too cool for that, and falls for our MC instead. There is insta-love - in just a month, they are declaring their feelings. BUT there is a reason for that. After all, a deep bond can be forged when someone is trying to kill you. I read this in one sitting, gripped by the story. I loved the dialogue between Sarah and Priscilla. Shyla was a wonderful surprise, the power transfer suspected. This book left me feeling satisfied and yet still wanting more, which is always a good thing! I would have like a bit more about the Native American side of things, but hopefully, that will happen in future books. I'm really glad I read this and have no hesitation in recommending it. Melissa Luznicky Garrett began "writing" books at the tender age of five before she was old enough to do much more than print her name. When she wasn't watching Sesame Street or Mister Roger's Neighborhood, she could be found sitting in front of her parents' typewriter, transcribing the conversations inside her head one keystroke at a time. Now all grown up, Melissa has several published novels. She lives in upstate New York with her husband, three children, and numerous animals.
Melissa is a certified elementary general education and special education teacher. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in literacy education. I've been busy these past few months. The light and dark souls have been reunited. It is now up to Nora and Darcy to track down the elemental souls with help from their guardians. Finding the four people who hold the souls of the four natural elements out of seven billion is an overwhelming mission. Only through translating the Statera and reminiscing of the ancient past, will they unlock the mysteries to locating the Elementals, breaking the curse, restoring the balance, and filling the emptiness. But their mission is interrupted by an unexpected guest – the Elemental guide, Lilly. Can this new addition to their team be trusted? Will they be able to complete these daunting tasks before the destructor strikes again? Quintessence is the second book in the Statera Saga, and we pick up a couple of months after the end of Reminiscence. Darcy still hasn't quite forgiven Nora for what happened, and she finds herself missing him more than she realised. However, they still have to search for the Elements, and now they have an Element Guide in the mix too. Oh boy, where do I start with this? First of all, I am loving this concept. I think the way Amy Marie is sharing her story makes it a delight to read, and very difficult to put down. Once again, there were no editing or grammatical errors that I noticed, but then I fully admit to being completely engrossed in the story. So, hands up, if there are any, I missed them! I won't give too much about the story away, as I definitely don't want to lessen the impact. What I will say, is it ends on one helluva cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more. Like right now!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, and I am LOVING the second. I can't wait to see where Amy Marie will take me next. Absolutely recommended by me. Amy Marie is a first-time author of the Statera Saga. She has lived all over the United States, but will always call Ohio her home. A huge fan of all fiction, she is always looking to get lost in the relaxing escape of a good novel. She’s worked several years for a major book retailer, and now enjoys a career in aviation as an air traffic controller. A sucker for a good old-fashioned good versus evil story, she’s been inspired to take on authoring a trilogy of her own. She delights in her friends and family, and the cuddles of her dog Brutus.
Nora Hutchinson has had feelings of déjà vu throughout her life. After her recent move to Boston for college, these feelings have suddenly become an everyday occurrence, taking on a new form by invading her dreams and nightmares. After chance meetings with two familiar strangers, Nora is lured into a task she never could have imagined. As she tries to sort out her dreams from her memories, she is pulled into the middle of an ancient quest she never dreamed could be possible. Reminiscence is based on an old Platonic theory with a supernatural twist, and weaves in history, romance, and intrigue in an urban fantasy setting. It's a Beauty and the Beast type fairy tale combined with a Fifth Element style myth! Reminiscence is the first book in the Statera Saga. We start off with meeting Nora, a college student who has strange dreams and feelings of deja vu. Her life becomes more than she bargained for when two men enter her life. And don't worry, this isn't the classic love triangle! One of them wants to kill her, and one of them wants more from her than she is prepared to give right now! After all, she is Nora, not Eleanor. Are you intrigued yet? You should be! There is a bit of everything in this book - drama, suspense, action, adventure, friendships, family, betrayal, curses. It's all here. And it is brilliantly written. There were no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. The characters all come to life, and are well-rounded. It builds up to a climax, and will definitely leave you wanting more. A different, great, read and definitely recommended by me. Amy Marie is a first-time author of the Statera Saga.
